El Premio de la Academia para el mejor largometraje documental es el premio de mayor prestigio para los largometrajes documentales.
Siguiendo las prácticas de la Academia, los documentales ganadores se enumeran de acuerdo con el año en que se estrenaron, conforme a las reglas de elegibilidad de la Academia. En la práctica, debido a las limitaciones de la distribución de los documentales, una película puede estrenarse al cabo de varios años, a veces mucho después de haberse rodado.
Premios y nominaciones
La primera vez que se otorgó el premio, en 1942, hubo solo una categoría de documental y cuatro ganadores. Al año siguiente, se dividió la categoría para premiar largometrajes y cortometrajes.
En la 41° ceremonia de entrega de los premios de la Academia, celebrada el 14 de abril de 1969, Young Americans, de Alexander Grasshoff, fue anunciada como la película ganadora del Óscar al Mejor Largometraje Documental, pero el 7 de mayo del mismo año se declaró que el documental era inelegible después de que se reveló que se había estrenado en octubre de 1967. El premio fue otorgado al segundo lugar, Journey Into Self, de Bill McGaw, el 8 de mayo de 1969.[1]
