William Robert Shepherd (Charleston, 1871-Berlín, 1934) fue un historiador e hispanista estadounidense, profesor de la Universidad de Columbia.

Biografía

Nació el 12 de junio de 1871 en Charleston, en el estado de Carolina del Sur, hijo de William Shepherd y Leonora Adaline Brown.[1]​ Estudió en escuelas públicas de Brooklyn y se graduó con quince años en 1886.[1]​ Siguió un curso preparatorio de tres años en el Mohegan Lake School de Peekskill (New York) e ingresó en la Universidad de Columbia en 1889, donde se graduó en 1893.[1]​ En 1894 recibió el título de Master of Arts y en 1896 el de Doctor of Philosophy.[1]​ Hispanista,[2]​ fue profesor en la Universidad de Columbia y miembro de la American Historical Association, la Long Island Historical Society y de la Academy of Political Science de Nueva York.[1]​ Contrajo matrimonio el 22 de mayo de 1897 con Antonie A. Osterndoff, de New Jersey.[1]​ Políticamente era descrito a finales del siglo XIX como republicano.[1]​ Falleció en Berlín el 7 de junio de 1934.[3]​

Entre sus obras se encontraron títulos como History of Proprietary Government in Pennsylvania (1896),[4]​ Historical Atlas (1911),[5]​ Latin America (1914),[6]​ The Story of New Amsterdam (1917)[7]​ y The Hispanic Nations of the New World (1919),[8]​ entre otras.
