Lona Fay Spain[2] (6 de octubre de 1932 – 8 de mayo de 1983) fue una actriz estadounidense en producciones cinematográficas y televisión.
Primeros años
Nacida en Phoenix, Arizona, Fay Spain era la menor de las dos hijas de Robert C. Spain y Arminta Frances "Mickie" Cochran.[2] Cuando tenía 17 años, Spain trabajaba como crupier en un casino de Reno, Nevada. Años más tarde, dijo: "Mentí sobre mi edad y conseguí un trabajo como crupier – y gané mucho dinero, mucho más que mi marido, que era un cómplice."[3]
Aprendiz de teatro
En dos meses, encontró trabajo en una compañía teatral en las montañas de Catskill. Obtuvo una tarjeta Equity, lo que le permitió seguir trabajando como actriz. Spain rechazó una beca universitaria después de asistir a la escuela secundaria en White Salmon, Washington. En su lugar, decidió realizar un aprendizaje en una compañía teatral.[cita requerida]

En 1955, Spain fue una de las 15 actrices nombradas WAMPAS Baby Stars.[4] Saltó a la fama entre el público cinematográfico a finales de la década de 1950. En 1957, interpretó a Carol Smith junto a John Smith como Tommy Kelly en la película dramática The Crooked Circle, en la que un joven boxeador es presionado para perder un combate. En 1958, fue elegida para interpretar a Darlin' Jill en la versión cinematográfica de God's Little Acre, basada en la novela de Erskine Caldwell. La película supuso el debut en la gran pantalla de Tina Louise y también contó con la participación de Robert Ryan, Jack Lord, Buddy Hackett, Aldo Ray y Vic Morrow.
Spain siguió este éxito interpretando a Maureen Flannery en la película Al Capone (1959) y apareció en películas como The Beat Generation (1959), The Private Lives of Adam and Eve (1960), Hercules and the Conquest of Atlantis (1961), Black Gold (1962), Thunder Island (1963), Flight to Fury (1964), The Gentle Rain (1966), Welcome to Hard Times (1967) y The Todd Killings (1971).
Su última aparición como actriz de cine tuvo lugar en 1974, cuando interpretó a la esposa del mafioso Hyman Roth (Lee Strasberg) en El padrino parte II (1974).
Matrimonios
Cuando tenía 16 años, Spain se casó con John Falvo, guionista y actor. Tuvieron un hijo, Jock Falvo (nacido en 1954), y se divorciaron en 1954.[2] En 1959, la actriz se casó con el pintor abstracto de la costa oeste John Altoon.[5] De 1965 a 1966, estuvo casada con Imo Ughini, un peluquero.[2]

Apareció como concursante en un episodio del programa de juegos de Groucho Marx You Bet Your Life (episodio #56-02, 4 de octubre de 1956, palabra secreta 'Hand'). A mediados y finales de los años 50 y 60, Spain apareció en Bonanza (Sue Ellen Terry en "The Sisters", en el capítulo 14 de la primera temporada), Gunsmoke (en 1957 como el personaje principal "Mavis McCloud" (S3E7) y en 1961 como "Bessie", miembro de una banda y asesina en "A Man A Day" (S7E14), Cheyenne, Rawhide, Whirlybirds, Hogan's Heroes, Perry Mason (Charlotte Lynch en "The Case of the Fiery Fingers"), Tombstone Territory (episodio "Pick up the Gun"), The Millionaire, M Squad, Adventures in Paradise, The Texan, Riverboat, The Rat Patrol, Gomer Pyle, USMC, Gunsmoke (episodio "Mavis McCloud" (1957) y episodio "A Man a Day" (1961)), Playhouse 90, 77 Sunset Strip, Have Gun - Will Travel (episodio "High Wire", 1957), Alfred Hitchcock Presents (episodio "The Last Dark Step" (1959) y "The Cuckoo Clock" (1960)), Maverick (episodios "The Naked Gallows" con Jack Kelly (1957), "The Goose-Drownder" (1959) y "The Cactus Switch" con Roger Moore (1961)), Pony Express, The Restless Gun, The Fugitive, Bat Masterson y como Angela en Wanted: Dead or Alive (temporada 2, episodio 18 (1959), así como la "cazafortunas" Amy Williams junto a Royal Dano en la temporada 2, episodio 3, que se emitió el 18 de septiembre de 1959)....
