Love Like Winter

«Love Like Winter» es una canción de la banda estadounidense de rock AFI, grabada para su cuarto álbum de estudio, Decemberunderground (2006). Fue compuesta por todos los miembros del grupo y su producción estuvo a cargo de Jerry Finn. La canción se grabó en los Conway Studios y Sage and Sound Recording (Los Ángeles, California), y cuando el guitarrista Jade Puget realizó su maqueta, en un principió la planeó para su proyecto paralelo Blaqk Audio. Interscope Records lanzó la pista el 26 de septiembre de 2010 como el segundo sencillo de Decemberunderground.

Grabación

La grabación de «Love Like Winter», así como la de todo Decemberunderground, tomó lugar principalmente en los Conway Studios y Sage and Sound Recording (Los Ángeles, California) entre 2005 y 2006.

Love Like Winter es la canción más desafiante con la que la banda se encontró en el proceso de grabación de su séptimo álbum, y en palabras de Hunter Burgan, tuvieron que «seguir un camino bastante loco» para alcanzarla. Desde su concepción los integrantes y las personas aledañas al proceso de grabación sabían que iba a ser una gran canción, y quienes la escucharon concordaron en que también iba a ser "un éxito". La pista surgió de una demo que crearon Puget y Havok y era tan «impactante y completa» que determino un estándar para lo que debía de llegar a ser la canción. No obstante, no era una demo «suficientemente buena» como para simplemente tomarla como «una canción terminada». Al grupo le fue difícil abordar la pista porque tenía una gran cantidad de pistas de programación y esto les impidió tocarla en una sala de ensayos. Incluso, Puget realizó tantas pistas que Finn le dijo que lo que estaba haciendo era imposible y que tenía que reducir el número porque no había tantos canales de audio disponibles.​ Por estos motivos, para Burgan, Finn tuvo dificultad para entender exactamente cómo llevarla hasta «el final». Todos en el estudio tenían una idea diferente de cómo exactamente debería ser refinada e «hicieron todo lo que se [les] ocurrió» para terminarla. Ante las dificultades, personas externas al grupo les empezaron a enviar ideas para darle forma. Burgan explicó que era «como si todos escucharan algo que no estaba del todo ahí, como si estuviera casi ahí, y fue un poco difícil no estar completamente resignado».[1] El grupo terminó intentando diferentes cosas en los coros, las pistas de bajo, batería, e hicieron todo lo que se le pasó por la mente. Las dificultades para concebir la pista los llevó a tener que recurrir a estudios externos al finalizar el proceso de grabación de Decemberunderground, porque aún así con el disco terminado, seguían intentando nuevas cosas. Esto llegó hasta el momento de darse cuenta que probaron cosas hasta el día previo a enviarle la canción al mezclador Chris Lord-Alge, y que le tenían que entregar la canción en el estado que estuviese. En ese punto, el bajista Burgan estaba teniendo problemas para desarrollar la línea de bajo porque no sabía como era la sección de batería ya que había cambiado tantas veces, y esto le dificultó en cuanto a sumergirse en una canción que realmente no sabía como suponía que debía de ser. Burgan estaba tan cansado del proceso, que tenía un teléfono justo en el bajo en el estudio para que los que no estuviesen escucharan.

Video
El video lo dirigió el director de cine Marc Webb.

El videoclip está dirigido por Marc Webb, quien también ha dirigido otros videos para grupos como My Chemical Romance o Evanescence. Los miembros del grupo quisieron evitar comentar cualquier aspecto del video hasta que este viese la luz, para poder así sorprender a sus fanes. El video comienza con Dave Havok reuniéndose con sus integrantes y luego empiezan a tocar los instrumentos musicales. En otra escena Dave empieza a seguir a una chica que no puede reconocerse ni identificarse. El video termina con Dave, sorprendido con la chica que hizo que cayera al agua donde Dave queda ahogándose y congelándose el agua. El video se estrenó en el programa de la MTV estadounidense "TRL" a mediados de septiembre de 2006.

07:30: «Weird session, we had a lot of this material, but some of it was amorphous. Everyone knew that "Love Like Winter" was gonna be a big song, but we couldn't play it as a band. It ended like the most challenging song to record out of all the songs and we ended up having to go so far down a crazy road to chase it. The demo Jade and Dave did was so striking and so whole yet not like necessarily good enough to just be like, "hey here's a finished song", but it was just such a high mark for what the song should be. And everybody that heard it was like "oh that's a hit". Everyone had kind of a different idea of like exactly how it should be refined and it was hard to approach because there were so many elements that were programming so we couldn't just like play it in a rehearsal room and i think because of that Jerry Finn had a little bit of trouble sort of understanding exactly how to take it and bring across the finish line. We knew like this is an important track for sure. We will get this and we will nail it but the first kind of rehearsal pre-production sesison was a little bit of strange like we had some stuff but it didn't feel like we had a whole record.»
24:40: «With both "Love Like Winter" and "Miss Murder" […] we were throwing everything out there trying to just see what worked. Jade obviously did a ton of programming on those songs. So much i think he came in on one of those or both with so many tracks of programming that Jerry was like, you have to reduce this number, we don't have that many channels open, like it's imposible.»
25:20: «We also had a couple others outside people sending us programming ideas and things for stuff and it was... everybody was kind of trying to shape these songs and it's like the songs were probably already great, i mean these songs were great from the demos, which is all credit to Jade. […] It was like everybody heard something that wasn't quite there like it's almost there, and it was kinda tough to not just be completely resigned, like "i dont know what to do". We have done everythin we can think of and in "Love Like Winter" we ended up trying so many different things on the chorus we ended up having to go to additional studios at the end of the process, like the record is done, and we are still like trying more things. I remeber us being like, okay, this is the finish linea here, we are crossing this tomorrow no matter what, we have an appointment at this mixing studio and Chris Lorg-Alge is going to mix this song wherever it's at. I remeber being in the studio, and having a phone in the baseline at this point because i was tired. I didn't know what the drums were gonna because the drumset had chaned multiple times so i was like it is hard for me to really dig into a song that i don't really know how it is suppoused to be. But he had suggested that i try a new base lines, and i'm like, we are mixing this tomorrow, we are not in, we dont have a studio anymore. I have a little tiny pro tools recording like an em box in the guest room where im staying […] and i went home that night and i dont know what am i supposed to do. And i'm go like okay, let me try a couple of things. So i tried a super busy bassline, recorded the whole thing. I've tried one that was super sparse really like simplified. And then tried one that had a more of a like an octavie approach like the "Miss Murder" octave […] more like a disco influence. That was meant to be like a wild card and i brought these three to the pre mixing huddle at Luke's house the next morning and had everybody or had whoever weanted to listen to it, and i'm like pick one or whatever and Jade went in, and this never ocurred to me, he kind of chopped him up and was like, part of this one, part of this one, part of this one. And i was like that's brilliant. We put it on a disk or drive and brought it into the mixing session and gave it to Chris Lord-Alge and he put it in there and he is like, he's pretty um no-nonsense dude no-nosense mixer, if he's not feeling something like a synth track you have been working on for a really long time, it's a delicate little nuance thing, but he is not feeling it, he'd just be like nope. So he's gonna know that i just recorded this like in this random room, like it is not this is not a studio recorded thing, but he put it on and he is like "you recorded this yourself?" What did you use? Sounds good."»
